Verner Panton trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In Copenhagen he initially worked in Arne Jacobsen's who designed the Egg Chair architectural practice. Verner Panton established his own design office in 1955. Later with the Verner Panton chair he is credited first with the design of the very first single-form injection-molded plastic chair -the Stacking chair designed in 1960. Verner Panton was also the first to create inflatable furniture. One of the highlights of Verner Panton 's career is the Fantasy Landscapes he created for Bayer in 1968 that have now achieved cult status. Verner Panton thought and created with the imaginary vision of a child in bold colors and shapes - quite evident in the Panton chair. He died in 1998. Verner Panton stated "The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination. Most people spend their lives housed in dreary grey-beige conformity mortally afraid of using colors." Verner Panton also said "By experimenting with lighting colors textiles and furniture like the Verner Panton Chair and utilizing the latest technologies I try to show new ways to encourage people to use their fantasy and make their surroundings more exciting." Based on the idea of the Ball Chair the Bubble Chair is a reduction of this design. As Ludwig Mies van der Rohe said: Less is more! A masterpiece of reduction.Aarnio about Bubble Chair: "After I had made the Ball Chair I wanted to have the light inside it and so I had the idea of a transparent ball where light comes from all directions. The only suitable material is acrylic which is heated and blown into shape like a soap bubble. Since I knew that the dome-shaped skylights are made in this way I contacted the manufacturer and asked if it would be technically possible to blow a bubble that is bigger than a hemisphere. The answer was yes. I had a steel ring made the bubble was blown and cushions were added and the chair was ready. And again the name was obvious: BUBBLE." 'There is no nice way to make a clear pedestal' Eero Aarnio notes. That is the lucky reason why the Bubble Chair hangs from the ceiling. Like the Ball Chair the Bubble Chair also impresses the user by the special accoustic. The Bubble Chair swallows the sounds and you feel isolated inside in a pleasant way even when you are in a crowded place. At the EXPO 2000 in Hannover eleven Bubble Chairs were installed in the Cycle Bowl "Blue Box" of the Grüne Punkt Deutschland Pavillion as small individual information spaces whithin the library. The Norwegean phonecompany Telenor has installed some Bubble Chairs in the entrance hall of their new building in Oslo to offer calm "rooms" for mobile phoning. In 1958 Arne Jacobsen designed the Egg for the lobby and reception areas of the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. This organically shaped chair has since become synonymous with Danish furniture design throughout the world. Because of the unique shape the Egg guarantees a bit of privacy in otherwise public spaces and the Egg with or without ottoman is ideal for lounge and waiting areas as well as the h The Egg originated in Arne Jacobsen's garage cast in plaster. Today the synthetic shell is padded with cold foam and covered with fabric or different types of leather resting on a star shaped aluminium base. Arne Jacobsen was very productive both as an architect and as a designer. His cooperation with Fritz Hansen dates back to 1934. The Ant and Series 7 chairs produced in 1952 propelled both Jacobsen and Fritz Hansen's names into furniture history. At the end of the 50's Arne Jacobsen designed the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen which introduced the Egg the Swan the Swan sofa and Series 3300 to the design world. Arne Jacobsen was and is an admired and outstanding designer. His furniture and other design work have become a national and international heritage.
